If a schedule is setup to a reasonable time ... I would spent some time
in the IRC too. My time zone is +8GMT. I'm normally at home by 10pm and
would stay awake (lately because of Gears Of War) until 1am during
weekdays. But during Saturdays ... I can attend any time until 6am
Sunday morning. Have to go to church on Sunday. :)

In my experience ... I learned J faster when I was discussing it at
real-time with someone. So I believe a J IRC community is a very good
idea ... just needs a schedule.

I agree with Brian that it might be more participated
if there were some regular hours or topical discussions
scheduled like the NYC meeting--which I wish they could
set up a sort of net meeting to join remotely.
