That sounds like a good idea.  Unfortunately, I have absolutely no idea
what to do about it. :-) 

Okay, Google comes to mind (more below).

I'm running nvidia proprietary drivers on an internal 1440x900 display
and an external 1680x1050 display (Dell 2005FPW) in Twinview mode.
Looking at the NVIDIA X Server Settings dialog, I see both displays are
running 24-bit color.  I don't see anything about DPI.  FWIW, the spec
on the external display is a 0.258 mm dot pitch, so I guess that's ~98.5
DPI, close to your 96.

$ xdpyinfo | grep resolution
  resolution:    212x115 dots per inch

Okay, that's rather higher than you suggested in one direction. :-)

I looked around elsewhere (xorg.conf, ...), but I didn't find anything
of interest as far as what's setting it or how to change it.
