I also use debian, I think sun java is no longer a must to run JWD.
newer debian/ubuntu got 2 versionis of java, gij and opensdk, the
/usr/bin/java is a symlink to either of these java. Type in terminal

sudo update-alternatives --config java

It will show all java installed, then choose opensdk (or sun if you
also download it) to run jwd without patch.
