The Palm pre has a fairly nice keyboard. Kind of small, but I find I can
type on it easily. Here's a picture of the Pre keyboard:

Most of the ASCII symbols J uses are available on the Pre keyboard using
the red function key, but there are a few that are missing from the
direct key labels, including: , ^ < > \ [ ] { } These symbols are
all one keystroke away using the "sym" key. The sym key pops up a screen
of the remaining ASCII symbols (as well as many other symbols). You
select the symbol by touching it on the screen. The "flick" gesture
scrolls through the additional symbols on-screen.
It is interesting that the Pre makes the @ symbol an un-shifted key.
A browser-based "J computing service" would be even better than having a
terminal session for J. The Pre has a nice browser, so it would be great
if I didn't have to install any software on the Pre to access J .
However, I'm not sure how one would go about replicating the J
interactive mode in a browser (type a line, hit enter, see the results).
Can the J interactive mode UI be implemented in a browser, say using
Ajax or something equivalent?
