I am running J on a mac and had no issues in getting it installed.

Download the correct file (for mac book pro it is j602a_mac_intel.dmg)
from here:
http://www.jsoftware.com/stable.htm

Then, as it says on that page:
"Download to Desktop and double-click to mount. Drag j602 to Home for
a standard install or to Applications for a multi-user install. Run J
with the red J icon in the j602 folder."

It is incredibly easy. Good luck.
