I don't currently have access to a machine running XP, and the last
Windows version I used seriously was Win2000.

But it used to be as easy as dropping the font file, called apl385.ttf
(downloaded from http://vector.org.uk/?area=fonts) onto:
C:\WINDOWS\Fonts. There's also (if memory serves) a Fonts item in the
start menu.

But you may need Administrator privileges to install fonts on your PC,
if it is a corporate computer.

XP has such a baroque collection of permissions that nothing seems to
work first time: certainly not on my clients' machines. And when it
finally does work, you don't know what you've done to get it to work.
And I'm told Vista is scarcely any better.

J itself doesn't need any special font. It's ironic that an article
about J makes out that it needs an APL font to read it correctly. If
this is the tip of an iceberg of novice problems then I'll re-think
the approach of JinaDay. But can I respectfully suggest you try
reading the article without the APL font, and see if you encounter any
real need to see correct APL chars? Courier New seems to contain most
if not all the APL chars used in the article. That's true for Courier
New on the Mac: I don't know if it's different on Windows.
