Since j701 is out of beta, I thought I should install
the "stable" release on my machines. I had played with
the beta releases, but cleared them out to make a clean
install. On my linux box at the university, everything
went OK, with both jhs and jgtk working as expected.
Next to my other machine, a MacBook Pro running OSX
10.6.6. I still have j602 installed but running the
current (j701/2011-01-10/11:25) libj.dylib engine.
So I cleaned out the old beta j7 directories and did
a fresh install of j701. Big mistake: now neither jhs
or jgtk will work -- jconsole is OK. Since my knowledge
of the operating system is pretty minimal, I have no
clue as to what to tinker with. So I'm asking for any
ideas as to what's wrong.
First, when I try to run jhs this is what happens:
Using the jhs (red) icon:
-----------------------------------------------------------
Last login: Fri Feb 4 22:02:18 on ttys001
/Users/jph/j701/bin/jhs.command ; exit;
[uni:~] jph% /Users/jph/j701/bin/jhs.command ; exit;
|domain error: gethostnameJ
| 0=res r=. gethostnameJ(256#' ');256
------------------------------------------------------------
I did have an early beta jhs working on this machine over
a year ago, but lately. On the other hand, the beta jgtk
*was* working, plotting graphs etc., but now using the
jgtk (green) icon I get the following:
-----------------------------------------------------------
Last login: Fri Feb 4 22:02:56 on ttys002
/Users/jph/j701/bin/jgtk.command ; exit;
[uni:~] jph% /Users/jph/j701/bin/jgtk.command ; exit;
jgtk front end is not installed.
The install downloads required files.
Windows install (gtk binaries) can take several minutes.
To install jgtk, run sentence:
install'gtkide'
After install, run jgtk with:
Windows: jgtk icon
Linux: command (J folder)/bin/jgtk
Mac: jgtk icon or command (J folder)/bin/jgtk.command
All: jconsole run sentence load'gtkide'
install'gtkide'

But all my attempts to run jhs or jgtk now fail. I should
add that when I had the beta jgtk running, I made use of
binaries that were referenced in the forum in, I think,
a message on Dec 13 by chris burke "[Jbeta] Gtk on Mac"
but that link has now changed.
Does anyone have any diagnostic suggestions?
Patrick
