Long time? How often do you rewrite all the old programs you ever wrote? Jsoftware already removes useful features we are using from J too quickly, eg. look at when they removed jep for no reason. I think that support for this setting (to allow y.) should be kept indefinitely, possibly even after x. is reused for something else when the option is cleared.
