I agree that support for x. and y. should be retained. While I never rely on
them, they have consistency with the overall naming system. It's a bit odd
to have six reserved names (x, y, m, n, u, v) but not odd to have zero
reserved names.

I'm happy that the dots were deprecated, and I can't envision when a
"classical" style would actually be benefitial, but I'm more comfortable
leaving it as a vestigal feature than eliminating it.
