I can't begin to say whether any of this is true or not. There are many
Americans (by no means a majority) who've been interested in bringing the
American troops home for a long time.

There is also a movement afoot (nothing significant yet) to organize a boycott
of French and German goods.

A great many patriotic (not jingoistic) Americans believe that the Germans and
the French respect Americans only when we are saving their butts or providing
them an economic benefit. Said patriotic Americans feel that the French and
Germans are knifing us in the back. Many of these same patriotic Americans
firmly believe that the Peace demonstrators are effectively supporint Sadaam
Hussein.

I'm not saying that I back all this, but that's the way sentiment is running.

On the other hand, there appears to be a strong belief in France and Germany
and even Britain that the European view on the looming war with Iraq is the
only correct view and that Americans should structure their political
decisions whatever way the Europeans say. Such an attitude just smiply
enrages not only jingoistic Americans.
