Greetings !

I was having a "discussion" with my wife over the relative cost of food in Singapore, where I live, and several places in the United States. She was telling me that dinner in a restaurant in New York could easily set me back USD$100, and this is the average price of a meal when dining out in the US. I've been to the US only twice, both on business, but both times to places that are ...somewhat remote. I remember food in Tempe, Arizona, to be about US$1.80 at the Mexican diner I used to eat at before going to work (No need for lunch because the servings in America for breakfast are HUGE !), and about USD$25 at this Bar and Grill for dinner (I shared with my boss because we could never hope to finish the BBQ ribs!). This was waaay back in 1993, so I'm not sure how much it is now. The other place I went to was near Marietta, a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia, and food was only slightly more expensive at the Denny's near my motel. Food in Atlanta was a different story ! I ate Chinese food in a food court and that set me back USD$15. And it wasn't even that good ! The cook was from Singapore too, but he sure couldn't cook !

Food in Singapore is somewhat cheaper but a lot less. Breakfast is about USD$1.80, and you'll need lunch which is about USD$2.00, and dinner is USD$10.00 if you want to eat in a restaurant.

I'm just wondering : is it really so expensive in America ? What is the cost of a meal in New York, and does it vary much across the US? and is it true that you can't get a place in New York unless somebody dies ? (maybe Lonni can answer that ...) I heard that rumor on Seinfeld or something.

Thanks and Regards,
pascal chong
