What exactly are you referring to as an "experimental" kernel?  The only
experimental kernels I'm aware of are some of the hacked kernels Gentoo
uses.  Both RH and Debian use relatively conservative patches.  I
personally use a vanilla kernel.  But 2.6.7 (the latest) isn't any more
experimental than the latest 2.4.x kernel.

There's even been a big fight between two patches that had differing
views on how to handle a certain problem.  Those two were XFS and Mosix.
 Do I have to say who lost (and the Mosix developer is not happy about
it either, so it may be a while before Mosix makes it as an included
part of the kernel).
