Well, squeezing things through the INET_DIAG netlink interface would be nice, but several other modern things have not bothered - like sctp, or even netlink itself, they use proc/net exclusively. (not that I think that is ideal, but..) Also keep in mind, patching things like lsof and netstat to use proc/net files is alot simpler than trying to work netlink into those programs for the first time..
