Sounds like you should just bite the bullet and implement this with netlink. All of Or's concerns are easially addressed that way. Including all the IB path information, and APM information is definately worthwhile. BTW, including a PID is not best, you should include enough information to figure out the pid(s) from proc/xx/fd, and vice versa.
