If you're converting directly from an Excel file (instead of pasting in 
tab separated values), then cells with dates should have been read as 
dates... but then I can't speak for the java library I used to read 
Excel files. I myself had trouble getting Excel itself to recognize any 
date I typed...

But you can just try to enter the dates as text in ISO 8601 format, e.g.,

    2006-12-22
    2006-12-22T12:17:00Z

Also, in the column header, append ": date" to the property name, e.g.,

    birth-day : date

That will make Babel generate a schema in which the value type of the 
"birth-day" property is "date".
