I was misusing default preferences; I've corrected this in 1.3. To work around this in 1.2, you can go to 'about:config' in your browser, search for 'appalachian' as a filter, and change the above pref to 'true' instead of the default false. You should no longer get the error, and when the OpenID Manager does finally show your ID(s), you can re-select the default. Apologies for the extra work and trouble.
