ChazZ, sorry for the delay in answering your questions. I'm currently traveling and not 100% focused on answering timeplot-related questions, but you're not doing anything wrong and I do would like to help you out with your questions. One thing that would help me to help you would be to post a URL that lets me see what you're trying to achieve so that I can read the code and understand better. You're not on your own, just that we are juggling a million balls and the same time and timeplot is just one of them (and not, honestly, the highest priority one either ATM).
