have you checked out RDF2Go http://ontoworld.org/wiki/RDF2Go ?

whereas it is not really lightweight either, but rather tries to bring 
together Jena and Sesame, whereas for reading and writing RDF I was told 
it's supposed to be nice.

well, I have the same problem as you describe, that I am looking for 
"the" API, but I am afraid there isn't.
