Hi Geert,
A couple of comments on this new screen...
I'm assuming that whichever name record is marked as the primary is what
displays in the Surname and First Name fields, with other full names
accessible through the Other Names dropdown? The screenshot that I put up
is similar here, but it seems easy enough to concatenate the name into one
string and display it as a single field.
If we do decide to show the name as a single string, we should provide
a global preference option for the name format. The user should be able
to choose from formats such as:
Fname Mname Surname
Fname M. SURNAME
SURNAME, Fname Mname
etc.
Actually, this would probably work best as three global options that
would also become the default options for printing persons' names on
reports:
Surname in ALL CAPS: Y/N
Middle names as Initials Only: Y/N
Surname first: Y/N
But, getting back to the screensot comments... The rest of the screen
that you made seems quite intuitive, which is a Good Thing. I like the
placement that you've chosen for most of these widgets better than the one
that I put together. However, I notice that the Attribute list is
missing.
Looking at your screen design, I wonder if it would be all that difficult
to combine the Attribute and Event displays into one common listbox (even
though they are stored in two different database tables). The only
drawback, then is that the user would have to scroll through more records
in this listbox. I don't think that's as much of a disadvantage as it
could be, though.
I'm still debating over whether I like having the Family section on this
screen or not. It's fairly obvious what each of the widgets in this
section does as well, but users running at lower screen resolutions might
have a hard time viewing this information. I was only just able to see it
all at 800x600 (yeah, I know the two that I put up are pretty big too;
it's something we need to think about). In the end, I think there are
more advantages than disadvantages in putting the Family information on
this same screen.
