Hello there all. I can't tell you how happy I am to see that there
is a useful genealogy program in developement for Linux.
I'm not a programmer in any sense of the word, so I can't offer
much help in that regard to the project, but if you need Alpha or Beta
testers, I'd be more than happy to help.
I've been doing genealogy for the past 15 or so years, and
presently have 5 different databases I'm working with. At first it was all
on paper, then I started using Brother's Keeper (version 4) and was quite
happy with it when my database was small. But as my source list grew I
found it lacking in the source department. I have since tried all the
Windows programs (and spend a ton of money) to find only two that I would
consider really useful, PAF 4 and Legacy.
A few months ago I started using Linux (Red Hat 6.1) and I sold on
it's stability and flexability. I've had a few programs crash on it and it
has yet to take the operating system out with it. That means more to me
than any amount of hype.
The problem I've run into is the serious lack of any real "useful"
genealogy program for Linux. I've tried everything I could find on the net,
and they all lack in one respect or another. Even Lineages, the
grand-daddy of Unix style genealogy programs, while powerful, is much to
cryptic for my tastes. I'd rather spend time working with my data rather
than the database.
As a result I've had to keep all my data on another machine running
Win95 and PAF 4.03. I settled on PAF because of the speed, clean approach
to the interface and flexibilty of data organization and retrieval. It is a
very powerful program once you learn how to ferret out all it's abilities.
All the time though I've been wishing that there was a comparable
program for Linux. When I came across your project on SourceForge and read
your proposals I was tickled. It appears you have hit the nail on the head
for what a genealogy program needs. Especially the sourcing. IMHO there is
nothing more important to a serious genealogist than keeping track of
sources.
I know this is a long letter, but I wanted to let you know that
there is a real need for what you are doing here. I wish I knew something
about programming, I'd really like to help. The only thing I can offer is
being a tester on Alpha or Beta releases. Believe me, I'll put anything
through it's paces. In the mean time I'll be keeping the data in PAF so there's no
worry of losing critical information.
Thank you guys for doing this. I know it is a lot of work and can
be very frustrating, but it seems to me that you're on to a winner here.

If I can be of any help, please let me know.
                                                Woodrow
