Please understand before I go any further that this is my opinion.
I don't want to start any "holy war" about this program or that program
being better. Everyone has their particular taste and this is mine.
I think PAF 4.X.X for Windows has about the best interface to
features setup around. The user interface is not all cluttered up with
gadgets and gizmos, but is clean and very easy to follow. All of the power
of the program is in the menus and/or on the toolbar. All the relative
information is visable on the screen, and you can select in the options to
have more and different types of information "pop up" when you hold the
mouse over a person's name for a selectable period of time. Right clicking
on any person on the screen opens a menu of operations that you can perform
on that person or family.
I have tried a slew of Windows genealogy programs, running the
gamut from Family Tree Maker version 7 to Ultimate Family Tree to Legacy,
Cumberland Family Tree, Brother's Keeper for Windows, Master Genealogist,
etc., etc. and I find that PAF suits me the best. It has a small memory
footprint, clean interface and can do just about anything I want or need it
to do.
So Geert, I would have to say that if you would like my opinion on
a good user interface, just take a look at PAF 4. If you've never seen the
program and would like to, you can download it for free from the LDS Church
website (www.familysearch.org) or some of the larger genealogy sites.
Unfortunatley, you will need to run it on a Win95 machine. But being free
and not taking a lot of disk space, it would be worth a look.
If you don't have access to a Windows machine an alternative might
be to download their users manual. It's a PDF document and comes with
enough screen shots to get a feel for how the program is laid out. That and
it gives you a feel for just how flexible and powerful the program really
is.
Best regards:
Woodrow
