The updated drivers took a few months to come out. I figured that the
problem was something to do with a packet arriving over the network during
the SRAM test, which would make the test software think it had gone wrong.
If I rebooted the machine unplugged from the LAN, it always worked.

Okay, that does sound dodgy. With me, it was a regular random occurrance
on bootup. With me, the updated drivers fixed it, but that obviously work
if it *is* a hardware fault.

This problem was originally reported by a lot of people. It sounds hard to
believe your vendor hadn't heard of it.
Anyway, my suggestion to the original poster is to update the drivers, and
see what happens.
