I use Worldonline (formerly LocalTel) and their unmetered-calls ISP,
'Screaming.net' (stupid, STUPID name). When I first switched over
from BT to LocalTel, the ISP was a disaster. I stuck with it because
it was free, so it didn't matter quite so much that it was so slow.
Over the last year, it has metamorphosed into nearly the best ISP in
the country.

Ever since the poor beginning, I have had Pap Authentification
Failures. I still get them. Maybe, 1 in 8 calls. I can normally
tell when its going to happen by how long it is taking to complete the
connection. When it fails (not all that often), all I do is try
again, and it normally succeeds.

I have always assumed that 'Pap Authentification Failure' is just one
of several ways that connection failures can occur, just as they do
with Wintel boxes as well sometimes, and that the only difference
between Genisis and Win Doze DUN is that Genisis tells you what went
wrong. The irony is that I am none the wiser, when Genisis tells me
about its Pap[a] not being authenticated (words like "bastard" do come
readily to mind, don't they!).

I think I would find an error message like these every bit as
useful and informative as the one about pap authenticity...

e.g.(1)
Sod off

e.g.(2)
Illegal thrum protocol flendix 8-o'clock Euston to Carlisle RAM vortex
copulation error ref.020-ABQiX mutherbrd conflict carrots and two veg.

e.g.(3)
Your computer has just committed an illegal act.

e.g.(4)
It didn't work.
