Hi Madhu, You can use the Table Browser to determine the total number of genes on chromosome Y. From the Table Browser (http://genome.ucsc.edu/cgi-bin/hgTables), select a clade, genome, and assembly of your choice. For this example, I will use the human (hg19) assembly. Make the following selections: group: Genes and Gene Prediction Tracks track: UCSC Genes table: knownGene region: select 'position' and type in "chrY"
Clicking on the 'summary/statistics' button will give you the total number of genes. Also, please see this previously answered question: https://lists.soe.ucsc.edu/pipermail/genome/2007-May/013691.html To retrieve gene names, go back to the Table Browser and select 'selected fields from primary and related tables' as the output format. Click 'get output'. Select the appropriate fields (for this example, 'name' and 'geneSymbol') and click 'get output'. For PARs, please see this previously answered question: https://lists.soe.ucsc.edu/pipermail/genome/2011-March/025376.html. I hope this helps. Please contact us again at [email protected] if you have any further questions. --- Luvina Guruvadoo UCSC Genome Bioinformatics Group On 8/2/2011 12:32 PM, Madhu Chaudhury wrote: > Hi, > > Is there a way to find out the number of genes on a Y > chromosome.
