The way I see it, you get to upgrade to 2005.1 from a starting point
that is less likely to cause you trouble.

Every step you make, without completely breaking your system, towards
the eventual goal of true multilib, is a reward because it gets you
closer to the goal.  Only when the goal is reached do the "good
things" start to happen.  However, there comes a point when it is
easier to install from scratch than to upgrade.  I prefer to go the
other way and keep it much easier to upgrade incrementally.

(However upgrading to 2005.0 did not go smoothly for me, and I nearly
gave up and re-installed.  I'm still not sure what I did that I saved
my system. :) )
