I'd go for any nvidia using the nvidia-glx drivers. There was a time when I tried using ATI under Linux, but it was the world's largest PITA (out of date drivers, really horrible xinerama multiple monitor support, lockups) that I quickly went back to nVidia. Note that you could use an ancient GeForce2 and it will still work fine (especially if your 3d use is limited to OpenGL screensavers :))
