:) That fix works except that i had to change all the relevent kde-base lines
in my /etc/portage/packages.unmask from the form:
>=kde-base/<whatever>-3.5_rc1
to:
=kde-base/<whatever>-3.5_rc1
Then I realised that i could do without the /etc/portage/package.mask that you
suggested anyway.

BTW, I am a gentoo (amd64) newbie for about 6 weeks and IMHO gentoo is the
best desktop distro I have ever played with... except for the usual gripes
many ppl have about various minor 32bit compatability issues.
