As amd64 is in process of stabilizing I tend to prefer to specify 
package version in /etc/portage/package.keywords, anyway this can be 
trickier to maintain:

1) as time passes, and lines are added to the file, many of them are 
left behind ineffective, referring to packages upgraded in the 
meanwhile.

2) sometimes a downgrade is proposed because the version unmasked is 
removed from portage tree, if you still want ~ version have to unmask 
another specific version.

To OP I can assure a mix of amd64 and ~amd64 is really stable and has 
more or less every program I need.
No real problems, I experience sporadic X lockups if I switch repeatedly 
back and forth between X and quingy framebuffer.
