You should use gentoo-sources instead of vanilla, it contains a lot of

Excuse me for my ignorance, I have been using vanilla kernel from
kernel.org ever since I moved to an amd64 system. That was the only way
I could get a bootable kernel that kept time for me. What Patches does
gentoo-sources have that are needed for amd64? I would be curious to
know what I am missing.

I believe the following is a list of the patches applied to various kernels: http://dev.gentoo.org/~dsd/genpatches/kernels.htm

It looks like you can download them from here: http://dev.gentoo.org/~plasmaroo/patches/kernel/gentoo-sources/

Hope that helps.
