I had this problem too, and I solved it by using the sdl sound output
(-ao sdl:alsa).
However, I'm not quite sure the problem was due to mplayer upgrade, as I
also switched to xorg-7.0 and Xgl at he same time...
I hope that'll work for you as well.

Another mplayer-related question: the new version of mplayer-bin
(1.0something, I'm not on my gentoo box right now) doesn't seem to work
with the win32 libraries, so I had to downgrade to the pre7 version.
Does anyone know what's the problem (and solution:) ?
