After some searches, it's still unclear to me whether my CPU, an AMD Athlon64 X2 4600+ (socket AM2) supports AMD-V hardware virtualization. Some sites say that only opterons have virtualization support, others say that all AM2 CPUs have virtualization. Even the AMD site is not clear (to me at last).

I believe all AM2 Athlon64's have AMD-V, not exactly sure though. It may also be disabled at the BIOS level.

Is there a way (eg, by looking into /proc/cpuinfo or somewhere else) to find out for sure?

Look for svm in the flags line in /proc/cpuinfo (for Intel VT you would look for vmx).
egrep '^flags.*svm' /proc/cpuinfo
