Hey, thanks!  I had been seeing (I think, I don't read but English, but 
it looks like it) the same error trying to emerge gcc-4.1.2 (I run 
~amd64), but hadn't had time to try to trace it down.  This will likely 
fix my problem then, too. =8^)
