Did you remember to copy the generated xorg.conf to /etc/X11/xorg.conf?

You might like to try some of the latest xorg stuff. Which version are
you using now?

The drivers are quite similar in xorg and xfree86 since the maintainer
commits to both, so don't waste your time going back and forth.

Some options for disabling specific parts of acceleration can help to
narrow down your problem as well. You can start with Option "NoAccel" to
disable general 2D acceleration, then narrow it down with many of the
Xaa* options mentioned in the xorg.conf man page.

Also as someone else suggested, try disabling dri as well -- just don't
load the "dri" module in your xorg.conf.

You may be interested in searching bugs.freedesktop.org for your problem.

Thanks,
Donnie
