I can't help you with getting X working, but you may not need the reboot, which will at least save some time.

X starts up using virtual terminal 7. You should be able to switch to another virtual terminal with ctrl+alt+F1 (or F2, etc) You can get back to X with alt+F7. F! will probably get you the terminal you stated X from, and F2 should get you a brand new one: you can log in, then kill X from there.

If that doesn't work, you should be able to ssh (or even telnet) into the box and kill X that way, if you have another machine networked to it.

None of this will help your problem, but it could speed up your experimenting process.

You've probably already thought of this, but I'd search around the net, IRC, etc, and try to find someone with a machine as similar to yours as possible, and try their config.
