Now I'm very confused. Somehow, the xfree-4.3.0-r4 ebuild appeared in my *overlay* overnight:

upstairs portage # emerge -upDv world

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

[ebuild U ] sys-apps/baselayout-1.8.6.13 [1.8.6.12-r3] -bootstrap -build -livecd -(selinux) -static 0 kB
[ebuild U ] x11-base/xfree-4.3.0-r4 [4.3.0-r3] -3dfx +3dnow -cjk -cyrillic -debug -expertxfree -i8x0 -matrox +mmx -nvidia -radeon -rage128 -savage -sis -speedo +sse +truetype -type1 -wacom +xml [empty/missing/bad digest] [1]

You have an old xfree that shouldn't be there. Get rid of it, or the
correct -r4 won't work.

It didn't *appear* in your overlay -- it was in your overlay all along,
but it was unmasked in package.mask recently.

I just realized that. I think it was from when I was going to try out kdrive. I downloaded the ebuilds and extracted them to my overlay, and then completely forgot that they existed ;) Why was -r4 masked if it wasn't even in the tree, anyway?
