Well, yes, because Linux isn't stupid. Lots of small writes which go on
in the background as opposed to one huge big write which kicks in every
so often and grinds your system to a standstill until it's done :) Plus,
last time I used laptop-mode (may have gotten smarter since then, of
course), there was still a measurable delay in 'spin up' even if it
wasn't actually spinning anything up.
