Lower your optimization level for all but hard-core number-crunching code. I don't think anything over -O1 is significant for 95% of the stuff people run. Where it would matter would be on dev-lang/R, dev-libs/atlas, etc.
Of course, lazy me is still defaulting to -O3 -- I should take my own advice sometime and do a benchmark on, say, kdelibs and kdebase, which take *way* too long to compile. :) -- [email protected] mailing list
