Distrowatch ranking system usually helps the new kid on the block. I did not visit the Gentoo page for quite a long time, but I visited Ubuntu's page to estimate how "live" they are. Everytime Distrowatch releases an article on a distro it goes up too (name linked from the article to the distropage).
