Depclean cannot unmerge important packages unless: 1) emerge path-to-ebuild was used (no longer possible) 2) user deleted/broken world file (user deserves what he gets ;] ) 3) acl use flag removed after re-compiling system
So dont be afraid and run a depclean. It will only remove dependencies
of packages you no longer have.
Extend "3" to general USE flag changes after a build. You are *really* encouraged to first run "emerge --update --deep --newuse world" first, then depclean, and then revdep-rebuild.
That's all explained in <http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=2&chap=1#doc_chap3> btw.
Wkr,

changed CFLAGS to "-Os" so emerged those packages and then "emerge --emptytree -v world" no more crying about that
btw "kde-base/kate-3.4.0_beta1" works fine on ~amd64 using fluxbox as wm
If wanted on amd64 (dual opteron) I can do a "cd /usr/portage/kde-base ; emerge --buildpkgonly --oneshot *" (but remember that -Os) let me know !
