It'd definitely work and be a lot easier than a solution involving portage, 
but then you'd have 700MB of sources lying around until you cleaned them up. 
How does that sound to mips people? If it's not a problem, we can do that 
(not immediately, out-of-tree building is possible in theory but will take 
some work and testing).
