I'm still curious why you chose gcc as your metric.  Is it because of
its size?

I mean, USE flags will play a major part in the speed of a GCC compile.

Wouldn't it be easier to use a smaller application?  You could even make
one of your own, as a small .c file, and time the compilation, then use
that as a metric.  That way, you know the results are always the same.
