GCC is a pretty bad choice due to the variability of build time on different systems with different USE flags. On amd64 systems for example it can take twice as long to compile because a 32 bit and a 64 bit tool chain is built (regardless of variation attributed to any other USE flags).
I think bash would have been a better choice, and should also be present on every system as I don't think portage would work without it. It also has far fewer USE flags to vary compile times.
Just my opinions, but I think that this project would benefit a wider audience if a better metric were chosen.
