this is my first join or post of gentoo-dev in what might be 4 years of enjoying the distro. in the beginning, both myself and Larry the Cow had an easy time hacking anything effortlessly and gracefully into an obviously simple and powerful layout.

two things i have run across while attempting to massage traffic for a realtime voip appliance in a spare-time endeavor:

1) mtu settings are not well documented where iproute2 is the module of choice. the closest net.example config example seems to be vlan's "set_flag 1". i f want to set mtu on an interface the only solution appears to be write another /etc/init.d script which does ip link set ...

bringing me to

2) where is the gentoo magic documentation centrally enumerated, such as: kernel patch magic behavior init.d syntax du jour ebuild 123's

forgive the redundance of this query, there's alot to weed through and the job at hand is [sometimes] a 5 minute operation.
