I am using tetex-3 on my amd64 system, I haven't had any problems with it so far in what I do. It is looking good already. I write my presentations in LaTeX beamer, and use Kile as an editor. Although I have also converted people to the ways of LaTeX using the easy entry LyX affords you ;)
