My suggestion would be to consider tree-cleaning.
Does anyone want to pick it up and make it work with
latest libxml2?

I use xmlstarlet from time to time, mostly when I've removed overlays
from [1]. If the package is dead, maybe it's time to clean it out, but
if others are using it and depending on it, I'd be willing to maintain
it and try making it it work with libxml2.

Is there a good alternative that one could use instead?

As far as I can tell, xmlstarlet is unique in its features. I use to for semantic XML patching and extraction, and I am not aware of an alternative. Please point one out if you aware of one. In the absence of an replacement it would be a pity to let it go…

Maintaining it is probably not an easy task. I am not saying you shouldn't do it, but it will certainly be some effort.
