gtk 1.2 has also quite a bit of unicode/utf-8 problems... on alsaplayer we were plenty of crashes due to that. We're in 2006 and many users with native languages that requires special characters uses UTF-8, as it was discussed a while ago, with time, also users having English as native language will start using UTF-8 to be able to exchange information with the others... Mac OS X already uses UTF-8 by default as system codepage.
