I suspect in line with the other comments, it would be optimal if said commit hook mentioned something along the lines of: "Perhaps try reforging signature/committer data with git rebase --no-ff origin/master" In its failure message? Making the way forward obvious in this edge case would remove any residual cause for partial objections :)
