i have no experience with that. on my servers, i use xfs, and it does
well. on my lower end machines and desktops i run ext3. even though it
is "old" and "slow", it seems to work the best for me

personally, i would wipe my harddrive, try out a couple of FSs and see
which you like. overall, though, FS choice isn't going to be the biggest
deal on your system. i would make sure to make sure you use a minimal
set of use flags (note: minimal set != the minimal use flag) and be sure
to use a small and fast WM. also, be wary of running large bemoths like
OOo all the time, and be sure, as always, to excise unnecessary processes.

if you have not already done so, rolling your own kernel is a _must_.
ensure that nothing is built into the kernel that isn't needed.
