most likely is that the vgscan and vgchange print out these messages on stderr, not stdout as it would be normally expected. You should try adding the 2>&1 to the end of the vgscan and vgchange line. Or, another possibility, /dev/console get's all the syslog messages as well?

we also tried 2>&1, as I already stated, but had no luck with it. /dev/console is a hint. If these messages are actually for syslog, then I should be able to redirect them somewhere at some point. I will investigate this.
