i don't know what virtual/qmail is make for, but why the virtual/mta is not

Just to clarify this as well:

Firstly, the reason for virtual/qmail is because there are different
qmail ebuilds including qmail, qmail-ldap and qmail-mysql. Imagine if
another package had mail-mta/qmail as a dependency but you wanted to
use qmail-ldap? Having a virtual solves this problem because the such
an ebuild can just depend on virtual/qmail.

Secondly, saying that virtual/qmail should directly provide
virtual/mta doesn't make any sense. Installing virtual/qmail will
actually install one of the following packages:

 * mail-mta/qmail
 * mail-mta/netqmail
 * mail-mta/mini-qmail
 * mail-mta/qmail-ldap
 * mail-mta/qmail-mysql

All of these are real ebuilds and it is these that provide virtual/mta.
